Forbort is 1st pairing with Doughty. Just saying. |

I don't have an issue with Jamie's hit, since like Cole he showed he can slot up into the mid pairing without completely collapsing at times. But 3 mil for a guy whose ceiling looks to be the press box is the issue. |

Jack Johnson isn’t going to be playing bottom pairing minutes so your entire blog is kind of (frank)ed. |

Pesce and TVR are the Canes 5th and 6th highest paid dmen, but Fleury(assuming Bean/Carrick don’t win the spot) will most likely play on the bottom pairing with his ELC. Since he’s a lefty. Especially if Faulk is traded, if not I’d imagine Pesce would be the only lock with Fleury/Bean/Carrick fighting for the left side and TVR being the 7th. If they’re going to play him on his offside the 6/7th dman spot would also include Mckeown. Kind of unreal how deep this blue line goes. When I lay it out there like this. I’ll ignore Fox since he’s going back to college although I think he’s easily on equal footing with Bean after development camp. |

Looks like the stats he used just took a team's 5th and 6th cheapest options... |

Which in no way equates to a third pair.
Bombulie addressed a simillar theme without having to skew the stats:
With teams still negotiating contracts with their restricted free agents and otherwise filling out the bottom spots on their depth charts, it’s difficult to say where the Penguins will rank in defense spending next season. Safe to say it will be near the top of the NHL. Their average of $3.85 million per defenseman would have topped the league last year.
In one sense, that’s a problem. The Penguins gave up 3.02 goals per game last season, which ranked 20th in the league. It would be reasonable to expect better results from a group paid so well.

It's an expensive D corps. They need to play like it. |

Provov and ZW from colombus as 5/6 defensemen? Salary/cap hit doesnt equate where one is slotted on a team |

Let’s use numbers (objective) to try to prove a preconceived opinion (subjective). I’d be fascinated to read blogs that somehow made sports stats into some type of double blind study. Don’t even have a clue what that would look like. But a very good blog to highlight the inherent problem with the stats...not the numbers themselves but those that write about them |

This was a ridiculous and poorly thought out premise. Some of those players are on EL deals and certainly aren't 3rd pair defenseman for their team. |
|
|
|
At the same time if they all made 4 million they’d be a bunch of #4s which would be decidedly average
Pay does not equal play when so many elite players are on ELCs and Bridge deals
It works against you even more when you try to assess a group using a pay formula |

Is this another crack at Johnson?

I'm still waiting for Wilson to release the name of the guy who was available who signed for less who could come and play in our system
I don't mind Johnson in our bottom 6, I think he's overpaid by at least 750k
Penguins don't have any NHL ready defenseman on ELC's. It was going to be a FA either way and FA's always cost extra
It aint much of a list

Assuming every team's 5th and 6th highest paid defenseman are their bottom pairing guys in order to prove a point is a little ridiculous.
Really all this proves is teams without guys on their first or second contracts have to spend a lot more on defense. |

Until those guys (for the Penguins Dumo, Maatta, Schultz over the past few years) play well and get raises. |

On an unrelated and note. R.I.P. Ray Emery. Tragic. I remember when he beat the crap of Marty Biron and got 22 penalty minutes in that game. |

The fixation on cost, without considering performance, is weird. |

Don't get it started again. Zillion charts will come up to prove Jack Johnson is the worst D-man in the league. |
